Is Recuva free?

Yes—a capable free tier exists for personal recovery. Paid options may add extra features; check the license terms that ship with the build you install.

Will it work on my SSD?

It can, but success drops quickly after TRIM and background maintenance. Start immediately and avoid writing to that volume until you have what you need.

When should I use Deep Scan?

When deleted files do not appear in a normal scan—after quick formats, corruption, or when the index no longer lists them.

The drive clicks or drops offline—what now?

Treat that as hardware risk. Imaging or a lab may come before software recovery; pushing a failing disk can reduce what is salvageable.

Can I recover to the same drive?

You should not. Restoring in-place overwrites free space and can destroy remaining traces of other deleted files. Always use a different disk or partition.

Does Recuva repair corrupted files?

No—it recovers bytes that are still on the medium. If data was partially overwritten, you may need app-level repair (Office, etc.) or accept truncated output.

Recycle Bin emptied—is it too late?

Not automatically. Emptied bins remove the easy UI path, but clusters may remain until reused. Stop writing to that volume and run a normal scan, then Deep Scan if needed.

How much free space do I need to recover?

Enough on the destination disk to hold everything you select—roughly the sum of file sizes you tick. The source volume’s free space does not replace a separate restore drive.

Does reinstalling Windows help recovery?

Usually the opposite: setup writes heavily to the system disk and can overwrite what you wanted back. Recover first from live media or another OS install when possible.

Virtual machines and VHDs?

Scan the virtual disk file from the host or mount it read-only if your stack allows. Writes to a live differencing disk can cascade—snapshot first when the platform supports it.

Network drives (SMB / NAS)?

Recuva is built around local volumes. Deleted files on a server usually need server-side snapshots or backup—your PC may only hold cache fragments.

Why do filenames look like random letters?

Deep Scan often rebuilds content from signatures without original directory entries. Use previews, size, and type filters to sort results.

Antivirus blocked Recuva—safe?

False positives happen. Download from a source you trust, verify checksums when provided, and temporarily allow only if your policy permits—preferably on a non-production machine.

Windows says I need to format the disk—should I?

Not if you want to recover data first. Try another cable, port, or PC, then scan. Formatting resets metadata and makes recovery harder.

Is recuva.dev affiliated with Microsoft or the Recuva trademark holder?

No—independent informational site. Read the license and any help files packaged with the build you install; this domain does not speak for other companies.

OneDrive / Dropbox / Google Drive deleted my file

Check the provider’s web recycle bin and version history first. Recuva on the PC may only find a cache or partial copy—sync engines move truth to the cloud.

RAID, Storage Spaces, or dynamic disks?

Software must see a coherent volume. Failed arrays need rebuild or specialist tools before consumer undelete is meaningful—do not resilver blindly if data is irreplaceable.

Can I run Recuva from a WinPE / live USB?

If your environment supports it, yes—often useful to avoid boot-disk writes. You still need a separate destination for recovered files.
