iTunes backup folder nuked

A cleanup utility removed the wrong tree. Deep Scan on the HDD found plist and manifest pieces; photos inside the backup were partially restored. They learned to keep phone backups on a dedicated drive with versioning.

They cloned an OS image without checking drive letters; the second disk picked up a new letter and the “empty” volume was actually an uninitialized partition table view. Disk Management + a letter sanity check before Recuva saved a weekend of wrong-target scans.

Three students used one drive the same week. Deep Scan surfaced layers of homework with mangled names; they sorted by approximate date and file size, recovered to the lab PC’s SSD, then emailed verified PDFs back—no rewrites to the communal stick until after finals.

When stories rhyme

These threads show up again and again in support channels—not because users are careless, but because defaults encourage risky clicks.

  • “Just format it”

    Windows prompts feel routine. Declining and imaging or scanning first preserves options—especially on cards with one copy of a shoot.

  • Recovering to the same volume

    It is the fastest path in the UI and the fastest way to shred remaining clusters. Always stage to another physical disk.

  • Running “disk cleaners” mid-panic

    One-click optimizers shuffle temp files and free space aggressively—exactly when you need every cluster untouched. Pause utilities until recovery is done.

  • Assuming the cloud “has it”

    Selective sync and paused clients mean the only copy lived on disk. Check the provider’s web UI before you stop local recovery.

Stop saves and installs on that volume; normal scan quickly, then assess TRIM reality in Blog.

Camera card asks to format

Eject safely, try another reader/PC, decline format, scan the card—not the desktop folder you wish existed.

USB spins then vanishes

Treat as hardware: different port/power, no long Deep Scan marathons until connection is stable.

Whole profile “empty” after update

Check other Windows users and C:\Users sizes before assuming the data left the machine.

File “there yesterday” on a network letter

Confirm whether it was ever local—offline folders vs pure UNC. Server snapshots beat carving SMB cache; see FAQ on NAS paths.
